ORCA (Ontario Recreational
Canoeing Association) moving water canoeing courses are offered at PaddleFoot.
ORCA canoe certification is widely recognized across Canada and by many
paddling organizations across North America. Whitewater canoeing certification
for ORCA moving water 1 and 2.
These courses provide a strong introduction to white water paddling. The
emphasis is on tandem canoeing skills, understanding white water principles
and safety. PaddleFoot
is offering both ORCA moving water level 1 & 2. Courses are taught
in tandem canoes. The moving water 1 is designed for people with little
to no white water canoeing experience. Level 2 participants should have
attained the level 1 skills before moving into the advanced skills class.
Participants should be able to swim, and be comfortable in and around
water.
The courses take place from the PaddleFoot's Muskoka
Basecamp. Course material is taught on the Gull
River and includes all specialized equipment, though you are welcome to bring your own gear if you choose.
This course covers, canoe design and construction, river reading, trip
planning, whitewater principals, eddy out, peel out, S-turn, back and
front ferries and much more.
Successful participants receive Ontario Recreational Canoeing Association
Moving Water
Level 1A or 2A, a certification recognized across Canada and
in many other paddling communities.
PaddleFoot
provides all the necessary equipment for instruction, such as paddles,
Pfd's, all safety equipment, and of course, canoes. Participants are
encouraged to bring their own paddles and Pfd's, and any other river
equipment they may wish. Participants should also bring extra warm and
dry clothes, and quick drying gear for the times we are on the water.
Though the course takes place as early as June, there is a possibility
that the air or water temperature will be cold, so you should be prepared
in case of cool weather.
Participants
stay in a tent at the Minden Whitewater preserve (Gull River), but for a fee can upgrade to a Lodge
room and drive to the Gull on the second morning. Meals are not included in the cost of the canoeing course, but
you can order meals in advance and enjoy three delicious prepared meals
each day. In the evening, you can continue to practice or relax by the campfire and gaze up
the the starry night sky.
