Young Adventurers 2, 1998

Day 1: July 20, 1998

We all meet at Westmount park. New faces old faces. Eddy forgot his pants. Leave for BaseCamp and have a lovely lunch (Green wraps). Long drive to parc La Verendrye arrive at our campsite at Grand Barage. We have super duper grilled cheese. We go over all the rules of being on trip and then Doug began his nightly ritual of reading from I want to go Home by Gordon Korman before bed.

Day 2: July 21, 1998

Wake up for our first morning. Lars introduces us to the art of YOGA. "Strong in the back legs", "Dogpoise and strong in the buttocks". We lost the tiny nut for the tent, but Jamie saves the day by finding it. We have a yummy breakfast of eggs and potatoes. We hit the water for the first time and canoe three lakes. Nick sees a snake at our new campsite and refuses to go and get the water. Spaghetti for dinner. Jamie labels the tent the "Castle".

Day 3: July 22, 1998

Our day begins with more YOGA and then yummy granola for breakfast. Jamie finally learns everyone's name. Long day of portaging with a 450m and a 1150m. Cheese sandwiches for lunch. Hard day, but for dinner lazy perogies! Yeah! New campsite has a private swimming rock and tonnes of blueberries, but we have to dig our own toilet. Chocolate before bed and storytime.

Day 4: July 23, 1998

Relaxing morning. Candace and Jamie collected more blueberries and many of us ate yummy fruit pancakes. Load up the boats and Nick sterned to the carry-over. We get to the portage trail which begins on a road. We stop and have a granola break., load up ourselves with gear and begin the portage. Outrageous fallen tree to look at. We continue to our beautiful cliff campsite. Of course it starts to rain then but Doug makes hot chocolate that tastes so good! We all go swimming - ah leaches!

Day 5: July 24, 1998

Danny wakes up and can't find any firewood. Luckily Doug helps him out and saves the day. Once the fire is going, Danny makes yucky oatmeal and hot chocolate. He endures endless complaining from the kids. We paddle our first lake, all playing twenty questions. Stop at mossy cliffs for cheese sandwich lunch. It's very windy but Hansen and Spice girl trivia keeps us all warm. Did the last portage of the day and decided to play in a set of waterfalls. After swimming we all warmed by the fire and then canoe to our campsite. We ate macaroni and cheese for dinner. Many played the popular card game forever known as Leach. Candace stole Eddy's hat.

Day 6: July 25, 1998

Brownies for breakfast. An easy paddle down the lake to our next campsite. We find a dead bird at our new campsite. We have lunch and and relax. Lars then teaches everyone how to make birchbark spoons. We spend the afternoon making our spoons, making bracelets and going swimming. Danny and Lars spend the afternoon making really good quesadias. Many of us played Leach and observed as Doug reigned as president with Candace as his first lady.

Day 7: July 26, 1998

Nick wakes up with heartburn from last night's dinner. Eat have yucky cream of wheat for breakfast. Lars leads an awesome YOGA lesson. We pack up and just before embarking Doug finds that Eddy has packed up part of the lake in his drybag. Short canoe to nice beach. Eat pita and leftover chili. Went swimming and played for a long time in the water. Sand down your pants. Did three portages after lunch, the very last of the trip, Yeah! Had to race to a campsite because there were many other groups on the water. Had Couscous for dinner.

Day 8: July 27, 1998

Wake up to rain and more rain. Short paddle to our last campsite. We set up the tent in the rain and a rain tarp over the fire. Doug tries to make a yummy hearty soup and ends up burning the whole thing. Instead we make ketchup soup and leftover couscous. We pass the day playing cards and making bracelets in the tent. At night we have fried rice for dinner and eat marshmallows. Story and then bed time.

Day 9: July 28, 1998

Wake up and say goodbye to La Verendrye. Last paddle into Le Domaine - "Val HALLA!". We all take showers and then Tim arrives and has fresh baguettes for lunch. We begin the long drive home but find time to make a quick stop at Ms. Patate for poutine. Back at BaseCamp we unpack the trip and prepare for Cabaret. We try to do it around the campfire but of course it starts to rain, we move the dining tent. Everyone laughs during the skits, special thanks to Eddy for his report on the car. We head up to the cabin - what a long walk. "Doug, why is the toilet so far from the cabin?" Last chapter of our book and Rudy decides to stay at camp. Incredible rain storm to fall asleep to.
